In February 2001, ground was broken for the major expansion project of the Oregon Convention Center. Since then construction has proceeded on a tight, multi-shift schedule.
Recently, the final steel roof beam was hoisted into place for the addition which increases the center's event capacity by 60 percent. The project will be finished in April 2003 and the expanded center will be nearly 1 million square feet in size -- the largest convention center in the Pacific Northwest.
Snyder has been involved in all aspects of roofing, waterproofing and moisture barriers for the facility, including the new parking structure. The new underground garage will provide weather-protected parking for 800 vehicles. The lower level of the garage, will have an additional 400 spaces. Construction activities for the remainder of the summer and fall will focus on completing the roof and exterior shell of the building.
A key component of the expansion objectives includes creating a seamless integration of design, functionality and materials between the new and existing facility. With spacious interior concourses and large banks of windows and skylights to flood the interior with natural light the new and old will merge as one. A comprehensive renovation of the original building is also taking place to enhance the blending of the two major buildings. |
