United States Postal Service - Portland General Mail Facility - Portland, Oregon
Snyder installed this building's original roof in the early 1960's and an initial re-cover of the roof in 1984. Because of the Postal Service's aggressive maintenance of their facilities, 1999 again brought this building to the bidding table, this time as a complete tear off and replacement of all membrane, insulation and flashing. After successfully competing for the contract, Snyder proceeded with the installation of a new hybrid Siplast roofing system, utilizing both hot asphalt and cold adhesive. A demolition crew, monitored for Asbestos abatement, worked nights and early mornings to remove the three roofs areas with multiple layers of existing insulation. To adhere to specifications that required keeping asphalt fumes to a minimum, only the early morning crews were allowed to use hot asphalt to adhere the new insulation. The later crew used only cold adhesive (to prevent fumes during working hours) to install the roof membrane. The project was completed on a compressed schedule to keep the installation from occurring during wet weather, and to minimize impact to the surrounding neighborhood (a well-developed apartment district). In all, Snyder workers were on site 18 hours a day, every day that weather permitted work to proceed.
